1845-George Schmidt, with two sons and three daughters came to Canada
His wife was deceased. He was a wagon maker by trade who worked around doing jobs in Lincoln County, eventually settling in Moultom Township near what is known as the Bird Road.
1883-During the winter he fell and broke his hip and was bedridden for 5 years, dying at the home of his Daughter (Mary) in Port Colburne. When the accident happened he was on his way to Dunnville with 20 pounds of ground wheat flour strapped to his back. He fell on icy roads.
One son was Jacob, born May 5, 1830, in Germany. He married Elizabeth Hoffman in 1854. She also came from Alsace-Lorraine.

Theodore and George went out west and homesteaded in Canada.
Elizabeth (Lizzie) and her brother John never married. They lived on a dirt road in Bismark. Fred lived across the road from them and was a farmer. He married Nellie and they had 5 children.
Jacob lived in Vineland, Ontario. He married Maud and they had several children.
They were Mennonites.

Mary also moved west.
William lived in St. David’s (which is near St. Catherines).
This generation changed their name to Smith.
Jacob Schmidt died and Elizabeth married Mr. Haist (pronounced Hiest).
She lived to be in her nineties.

Philip Edward Ensmenger was born February 20, 1858. His mother’s name was also Elizabeth Hoffman. She came from Alsace-Lorraine and so did his father. They settled in Brooklyn, New York. Philip had a sister named Mary.
The two Elizabeth Hoffman’s never knew each other.
Philip went to Canada on a hunting trip and met Phoebe by chance. They didn’t know each other before that. Philip returned to Brooklyn but decided to come to Buffalo, New York and take the Fireman’s Exam. Then Phoebe came to Buffalo to live with her cousin, Hanna, and work there. Phoebe’s sister, Mary Smith, was married to Hanna’s brother.
